Lipodensitometry – Body composition densitometry
Body composition densitometry, also known as DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) body composition analysis, is an examination that accurately measures the distribution of fat, muscle, and bone mass in the body.
Why undergo body composition densitometry?
This exam is used to:
- Assess overall body composition (fat, muscle, bone).
- Track body changes related to weight loss or gain, athletic training, or aging.
- Monitor medical conditions that may affect muscle or bone mass, such as chronic kidney disease, certain metabolic disorders, or specific medical treatments.
A referral from your doctor or specialist is required for this exam.
- It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing without zippers or metal objects (buttons, belts) around the waist.
- Avoid taking calcium supplements 24 hours before the exam, as they may affect the results.
- If you have had a contrast injection, a nuclear medicine exam, or a recent procedure involving metal implants, please inform the clinic before your appointment.
- This exam is generally not recommended for pregnant women.
- If your weight exceeds the limit of the machine (typically between 160 and 200 kg), please check with the clinic to see if the exam is feasible.
- It is important to remain still for a few minutes to ensure the accuracy of the results.
