It gradually leads to <strong data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"613\">muscle weakness<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"626\">atrophy<\/strong>, and, in advanced stages, a <strong data-start=\"655\" data-end=\"675\">loss of mobility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"678\" data-end=\"922\">There is no single test to confirm ALS. However, <strong data-start=\"727\" data-end=\"746\">medical imaging<\/strong>, especially <strong data-start=\"759\" data-end=\"795\">magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)<\/strong>, plays an important role in <strong data-start=\"824\" data-end=\"860\">ruling out other possible causes<\/strong> and in <strong data-start=\"868\" data-end=\"921\">better understanding the neurological involvement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"1231\">At <strong data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"938\">Radimed<\/strong>, imaging exams are performed using <strong data-start=\"974\" data-end=\"1004\">state-of-the-art equipment<\/strong>, such as the <strong data-start=\"1018\" data-end=\"1060\">GE Healthcare SIGNA Artist MRI scanner<\/strong>, which provides <strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1103\">high-resolution images<\/strong>. We believe that a clear image is above all a tool for <strong data-start=\"1347\" data-end=\"1377\">understanding and guidance<\/strong> in what can often be a complex healthcare journey.<\/p>\n<h2>Understanding Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1494\" data-end=\"1757\">Diagnosing ALS can be a lengthy process because it is a <strong data-start=\"1550\" data-end=\"1576\">diagnosis of exclusion<\/strong>. Physicians rely on the <strong data-start=\"1601\" data-end=\"1630\">patient\u2019s medical history<\/strong>, a <strong data-start=\"1634\" data-end=\"1676\">comprehensive neurological examination<\/strong>, and various tests to rule out other conditions that may cause similar symptoms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1759\" data-end=\"1980\">ALS is a <strong data-start=\"1768\" data-end=\"1791\">progressive disease<\/strong> that leads to muscle weakness, atrophy, and, over time, paralysis. It affects about <strong data-start=\"1876\" data-end=\"1905\">2 to 5 people per 100,000<\/strong> worldwide. Symptoms vary widely from person to person but often include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"2031\">difficulty speaking, swallowing, or breathing,<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2034\" data-end=\"2050\">muscle cramps,<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2053\" data-end=\"2070\">spasticity, and<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2073\" data-end=\"2103\">gradual weakness in the limbs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Role of MRI in ALS evaluation<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2153\" data-end=\"2282\">MRI does not directly diagnose ALS, but it helps <strong data-start=\"2202\" data-end=\"2242\">exclude other neurological disorders<\/strong> that may mimic its symptoms, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"2285\" data-end=\"2315\"><strong data-start=\"2285\" data-end=\"2312\">multiple sclerosis (MS)<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2318\" data-end=\"2352\"><strong data-start=\"2318\" data-end=\"2349\">brain or spinal cord tumors<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2355\" data-end=\"2378\"><strong data-start=\"2355\" data-end=\"2372\">strokes (CVA)<\/strong>, or<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2406\"><strong data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2405\">spinal cord injuries<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong data-start=\"2413\" data-end=\"2426\">Brain MRI<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2429\" data-end=\"2650\">Brain MRI provides a detailed view of the <strong data-start=\"2471\" data-end=\"2487\">motor cortex<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2492\" data-end=\"2510\">nerve pathways<\/strong>. In some advanced cases, <strong data-start=\"2536\" data-end=\"2560\">motor cortex atrophy<\/strong> may be visible, but the primary purpose of this exam is to <strong data-start=\"2620\" data-end=\"2649\">rule out other conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong data-start=\"2657\" data-end=\"2700\">Spinal MRI (Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2703\" data-end=\"2846\">Spinal MRI helps <strong data-start=\"2720\" data-end=\"2749\">visualize the spinal cord<\/strong> to detect possible <strong data-start=\"2769\" data-end=\"2812\">compressions, lesions, or abnormalities<\/strong> that may explain muscle weakness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2703\" data-end=\"2846\">It is important to note that, while powerful, MRI has limitations in the early diagnosis of ALS. Imaging-visible changes are generally not present during the initial stages of the disease.<\/p>\n<h2>How Does an MRI Work?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"106\" data-end=\"385\"><a href=\"https:\/\/radimed.ca\/en\/services\/magnetic-resonance-imaging-mri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)<\/a> is a non-invasive, painless, and radiation-free exam that provides highly detailed images of the brain, spinal cord, and other internal structures.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"411\"><strong data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"409\">1.
